Behind the cypress tree is a Renaissance palazzo commissioned by Viviano Atti in 1552. Enjoy the incomparable view of the valley to the east of Todi from the Piazza Garibaldi. One can easily imagine the strategic defensive choice of this high hill by Todi’s founders and inhabitants over the centuries.

POI-15. San Fortunato Church

The church of Saint Fortunato was built on the site of a Roman temple, on the highest point in Todi. It stands 1,350 feet above sea level and 800 feet above the Tiber River. The original church was built by the Benedictines as part of their monastery in the twelfth century AD. It was consecrated by Pope Innocent III in 1198. Two stone lions flank the steps and possibly date as far back as the seventh century.

In AD 1292, the Franciscans acquired the church and rebuilt it as one of the first “hall churches,” very long and tall, yet somewhat wide, and characteristically much brighter than similar churches in France and elsewhere. Construction began, but was stopped in 1348 when the plague decimated the populace of Todi. Work was restarted and interrupted at times due to political conflicts. By 1465, the church was almost completed, and to this day it has never been fully completed. Among the Franciscan churches, San Fortunato is second only to the Basilica in Assisi in size.
